Philosophy

A+T has the simple mission of producing the best yacht instruments ever made and supporting these very well.

Making the first major step forward in instrument performance since the 1980s. These are designed from the ground up using the latest materials and techniques, without compromise, while retaining classic looks.

Excellent service and support for the complete range of instruments is a core principle, in particular providing focused 24/7 support for complex Superyachts and race boats.

Founders Richard Tinley and Hugh Agnew, have over 60 years combined experience in race navigation, marine instrument design, troubleshooting, fitting, and repair.

Richard served his apprenticeship at B&G before going on to run the service department there. Then, after 7 years in the Caribbean installing electronics on large yachts, he founded Tinley Electronics, and the independent, B&G service, running this for 20 years and rebuilding many thousands of instrument systems. He is also a gifted electronics and software designer and has made many custom products used in America’s Cup projects and on Superyachts worldwide.

Hugh, a Cambridge mathematician, and oceanographer spent his career building navigation systems for the offshore, military, and yachting industries. He developed the first TV tracking used for America’s Cup in Fremantle in 1987, was the inventor of the Yeoman plotter, and developed the first telephone-based car navigation system. Throughout he has sailed professionally as a navigator and continues to do this on some of the world’s largest and fastest yachts.

All A+T yacht instruments are made with uncompromised attention to detail and an obsession with testing. Every instrument made is submerged in 1m of water for 24 hours and run in the oven at 75 Deg C before shipping.

Design, assembly, and testing are all done in Lymington, UK where clients are welcome to visit, give feedback and new ideas on future directions.
